Simplification is the Key

"Rearing and flipping over backwards is the single most dangerous thing a horse can do!"

Why does a horse rear?
Rearing is a refusal to go forward or an evasion to your "go forward" aids or cues!""

How do you fix a rearing problem?
Simply put, "keep the horse's feet moving in any direction except backwards!"  It is impossible for a horse to rear while in a canter. In the video at the bottom of the page you will find a  a detailed explanation of the two most common methods to fix this unwanted behavior.

Over the years, countless people and horses have been seriously injured or even killed by this type of unwanted behavior. This behavior is not to be taken lightly. A horse can go 6 different directions: forward, back, left, right, down, and UP! The truth is that it can happen at anytime without any warning from the horse or action on your part. If you have a horse that is starting to rear, seek help from a professional before you or your horse get seriously injured or even killed. "It is better to put a welt on the horse's butt than have the horse put you in the grave!"

Clinic in Green Bay Wisconsin

Wow! What a great weekend in Green Bay Wisconsin! The weather was great and we had an arena full of participants. This was Randy's first clinic held in,,,,

Green Bay Wisconsin. The purpose for this clinic was to shoot a promotional video. The video is now in post production and editing phase; it will be freely distributed in the coming months. This is the first phase of Randy's training videos and other training aids in helping people to gain a better understanding of horses.

Friday morning we set up an abbreviated colt starting demo. All the demos this weekend were designed to utilize the time needed to get video shots; however, we had a nice young unbroke mare that allowed us to get the shots we needed to get her first ride under saddle. In the afternoon we had an older mare that had trailer loading issues. Randy decided to use the round pen to show her that the trailer was a place of rest and everything else was work. After 30 minutes, both Randy and the mare were huffing and puffing. Not long after that, to Randy's and the crowd's astonishment, the horse realized that life in the trailer was not so bad. Good thing, I'm not sure if either one would have lasted any longer running around.

Saturday morning Randy got all the riders together for a ground session followed by a riding session in the afternoon. All-in-all participants learned how to soften their noses and move shoulders around the arena.

I would like to give a special thanks to Jackie for the use of Spirit, Sally @ Stone Creek Riding Center, Ali for her hospitality, and finally Linda Walker @ LWvideo Productions.

Randy Byers Horsemanship
Active Versus Passive Horsemanship

In a world full of horse trainers, clinicians and equine professionals competing to make a mark for themselves, many find new ways to reinvent the wheel. However, several try to put their knowledge into some package where we may identify with it all. In the equine world, leadership is the key to survival and many of these professionals communicate their opinion of equine behavior and how we should cope with this dynamic. The question now becomes, what form of leadership is right for us? Read more....
